    WAR FILMS

War films often depict the horror and heartbreak involved in war, letting the actual combat fighting or conflict provide the main plot or background for the action of the film. These battles could be against nations or humankind. Usual elements in the action-oriented war plots include POW camp experiences and escapes, air battles, personal bravery, espionage, "war is hell" brutal scenes, submarine combat, trench/infantry accounts, or male-bonding buddy adventures during wartime. A popular sub-genre war films in the 1950s and '60s was the prisoner of war film (POW).

A recent film in this genre is Hart's War. It is a World War II prisoner of war based on a novel by John Katzenbach. Starring Bruce Willis, Colin Farrell and Terrence Howard. The film, directed by Gregory Hoblit, was shot at Barrandov Studios in Prague, and released on 15 February 2002(US), 24 May 2002 (UK).

"New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS) Hollywood filmmaker Bryan Singer, who is currently on a promotional tour across Asia and Europe with superstar Tom Cruise for his Nazi thriller "Valkyrie", has revealed that the actor is keen on visiting India to promote the film.

"Tom wants to go to India for the promotion. His daughter (Isabella, 16, adopted) has told him a lot about the country and he is eager to go there. India is also an emerging and growing market in terms of business for us," Singer told IANS over phone from Seoul, South Korea.

"I'd also like the Indian audience to know that 'Valkyrie' is a true and extraordinary story. It's an edge-of-the-seat assassination thriller and is the story of a neglected event in time," added the director who is also contemplating visiting Japan and China as a part of the promotional tour."

Part of the promotion of Valkyrie included a promotional tour. Tom Cruise has been very busy with his world promotional tour and has visited Korea, Berlin, London, Moscow and Madrid.

    "Tom Cruise to visit Seoul

    December 30th, 2008 by Chantal

Tom Cruise will visit Korea for the first time in seven years as part of a promotional tour for his upcoming movie, “Valkyrie.’’
The 46-year-old actor will arrive with filmmaker Bryan Singer and stay for two days, appearing at a red carpet event, Jan. 17 and at a press conference at the Grand Hyatt Seoul, Jan. 18. According to 20th Century Fox Korea, Korea is the only Asian country the two figures will visit during their tour.
    "

United Artists is a host studio that Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner partly own. With UA’s recent films not doing so well (Lions for Lambs performed badly in the box office and the intended production for Pinkville by Oliver Stone was cancelled), demands was put on Valkyrie to do will. The film changed release dates multiple times. It was originally slated to be released in August 8, 2008, then moved up earlier to June 27, 2008. The film was then held off to October 3, 2008 to avoid competition from WALL-E and Wanted, and to enable the late filming of the North African battle sequence. The October date was also originally chosen to increase the film's chances of awards success. In April 2008, the release date was pushed back to February 13, 2009, with the studio citing the early fall schedule as too crowded with Academy Award prospects. Valkyrie would have taken advantage of the lucrative President's Day weekend, after The Wolfman and The Pink Panther 2 were moved from this date.

    Valkyrie teaser and poster

The clip starts with a wide shot which establishes the setting. For the next 30 seconds we continue to see a range of high shots which shows how vulnerable they are because they are so isolated. The transition between these shots were slow to begin with but by the time we see the plane overhead the speed of the transitions were faster and sometimes they were not used. This technique adds a sense of urgency to the trailer.

Over the three shots of someone getting dressed you can hear a heart beating and the heartbeat is then used to edit the shots. The shots cuts in time to the beat.

I thought the reason for shooting this particular scene from different angles while zooming in at the same time, is to show a new development in the story. At the end of these three shots the mood of the clip changes. We hear a fuse then a ticking starts adding a sense of urgency, the scene then starts to change in time to the ticking. The tempo of the ticking changes when we see the leads’ family, he then says “If I fail”. Its almost as if he is saying his finial goodbye and that time is running out.

The blood spatter on the screen gives the audience pointers about the movie and the task of the “Bastards”.
To me the sound effect used with each new splatter sound like a different weapon. You have a gun shot and then by the end you have a sort of slashing noise which could be from a knife.

In February a few weeks after the teaser trailer was released, these three posters were made public. The posters all show blooded weapon which leave a lot to the imagination as to what happened. These posters add to peoples curiosity about the film.

Individual poster was released to introduce the characters to the audience.

    Defiance film Promotion.

Paramount Vantage was originally known as but changed to Paramount Classics in 2006. It acts as the specialty film division for Paramount Pictures charged with producing, purchasing, distributing and marketing films, generally those with a more "art house" feel than films made and distributed by its parent company. ,which in turn is part of Viacom. In 2006, the Paramount Vantage brand branched off from Paramount Classics, which was relaunched in 2007 as a distributor of "smaller, review-driven films including foreign-language acquisitions and documentaries."
In 2007, Paramount Vantage co-produced No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood with Miramax Films. The partnership paid off when both films were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 80th Academy Awards, with the former film winning. The two won a combined six awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis in Blood and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Javier Bardem in No Country.

    Defiance Teaser and poster

The film was set in 1941. The fiim is based on the true story of the three Bielski brothers. The film is shown through their prospective has they fight for survival. Just after the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939, the brothers take to the woods for shelter. They are then soon joined by others we are running from the anarchy in the main cities and the savagery being inflicted on the Jews. On the run and hiding in the deep forests of the then German occupied Poland and Belorussia (World War II), the three Bielski brothers find the impossible task of foraging for food and weapons for their survival.

Things I like about the trailer that I want to use for my own production is the intensity at the start of the clip. The clip start with wide shot of a house or a cottage at night, this immediately create confusion in the mind of the audience because you can just make out the light coming out of the windows. From there we cut to a profile shoot of the main character and you can tell from his facial expression that something bad just occurred or is about to happen. The director distinguishes the difference between times by using black and white shots when we see a series of flashback. although this is the main trailer and i will not be able to establish as much of the plot as this clip does.

Right from the start of the clip they tried to create an atmosphere of battle. You can hear people marching, which is then used as a device to edit the shoots. The non-diegetic sound of someone giving a speech and then people cheering also supports my assumptions.

No voice over was used rather the story was told through a series of text on a black screen. The words move in time to the marching and at the same time they are moving to the centre creating the sense of emanate danger. The font and colour gets bolder through out the course of the teaser. The music also increases in tempo and layers. At the start you can hear sound effects but by the end you can hear a choir orchestra.

    Questionnaire results.

After conducting my questionnaire I handed it out to 20 people. These are some of my results.

    1) Of the 20 people I ask 13 0f them were female, and 7 were male. It was important for my to identify my target audience in order to get a clear idea of what they would want to see. As a result my target age group is 18- 34 males. Although the results from my questionnaire might not reflect this I recognise that in order for my product to be success real terms this should be my main audience.

    2) The reason I asked this question was to understand my audience’s media (film) consumption patterns. Most of my participants chose the other box, and some of the response I got back was that they would watch a film at least once a month in a cinema. I then wanted to find out what influenced them in choosing what film they watch. Most people said that the trailer was the biggest consideration when deciding what to watch. the next biggest influence was friends. this is due to the fact that most people will watch a film with someone else.

    3) From my questionnaire I found that the most popular genre was comedy and in second place was horror. This tells me that there is a demand for horror movies.

    Terminator 4: "Salvation"

Empire is a British film magazine published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media. From the first issue in July 1989, the magazine was edited by Barry McIlheney and published by Emap. Bauer purchased Emap Consumer Media in early 2008. It is the biggest selling film magazine in Britain, consistently outselling its nearest market rival Total Film and is also published in Australia, Turkey and Russia. Empire organises the annual Empire Awards. The awards are voted for by readers of the magazine.
A qoute from their website abou the issue.
We’ve got a huge feature on the entire Terminator series to this point, looking at the films, the TV show and with all-new interviews from many of the people who made it.

This issue looks as if it’s going to explore the entire Terminator mythology. I’m intrigued. Terminator Salvation hit’s theaters on May 21 and is directed by McG. The film co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Anton Yelchin, Moon Bloodgood, and Common.

    Teaser Trailer

Teaser trailers are generally shorter version of the main trailer. The purpose of it is to “tease” the audience into being interested in movie that they will go and view the movie when it is released. They often include the film's tagline and key footage in a condensed version which is more television-friendly. The brief advertisement is usually not terribly costly to make or expensive to air on television, and it can suck viewers in, getting people hyped up about a movie months before it is released.

In this teaser we can hear a voiceover belonging to John Conner. While watching the clip I got a sense that we were listening to a broadcast or some sort of pirate radio transmission. I came to this conclusion due to the disturbance with the analogue signal, it keeps cutting out. This technique works well because it has been used as transitions between the numerous scenes used in the clip. The weak signal adds emphasis on the conflict or battle that takes place in the movie. The speed the shots have been edited together and the length of the shots are not only a convention of a teaser but they also let use know the pace the movie is likely to take due to fact
    it is an action film.

    Latest development

After thinking more about it I think I am going to go with a war time theme, to be more specific, World War II. My inspiration come form two big blockbusters, Valkyrie (2008) and Inglourious Basterds (2009).

Valkyrie is a 2008 historical thriller film set in Nazi Germany during World War II it was directed by Bryan. The film stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, one of the key plotters. In Nazi Germany during World War II, as the tide turned in favor of The Allies, a cadre of senior German officers and politicians desperately plot to topple the Nazi regime before the nation is crushed in a near-inevitable defeat. To this end, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, an Army officer convinced he must save Germany from Hitler, is recruited to mastermind a real plan. To do so, he arranges for the internal emergency measure, Operation: Valkyrie, to be changed to enable his fellows to seize control of Berlin after the assassination of the Fuhrer. However, even as the plan is put into action, a combination of bad luck and human failings conspire on their own to create a tragedy that would prolong the greater one gripping Europe.

Inglourious Basterds is a 2009 revenge war film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and released in August. It was filmed in several locations, among them Germany and France, beginning in October 2008. The title of the film was inspired by Italian director Enzo Castellari's 1978 film The Inglorious Bastards. However, it is not a remake. Instead, it is set in Nazi-occupied France during World War II, and depicts a plan to assassinate the Nazi leadership. The film tracks the separate attempts to kill Hitler by two disparate forces, one being the

"Basterds", a motley crew of Jewish American soldiers out for revenge against the Nazis.

I know that perhaps I being too adventurous but because it is the teaser we don’t need explosions.

    Inital Ideas

    Name: “They are coming”

Location: Springfield, golf course- they have a lot of slopes and hills and at this time of the year a lot of the areas (on camera) can be made to look like a forest.

Voice over:“6707 million of us, 6 billion of them, May 29th – They are coming”

Example of shots: At the start, I will start with wide shots then through the teaser we will get closer and closer till there is an extreme close up of someone’s eyes. This is done to emphasis the idea of danger is coming, I want to create a sense of urgency through the teaser.

    1. Product Research

I am going to us this clip as inspiration because it use a lot of landscape shots, which is something I want to try and use in my own trailer.
